Sussex County Habitat for Humanity's AmeriCorps Class of 2010

Liz Barron, Volunteer Coordinator
Hometown: Haverhill, MA   College: University of Vermont

Why did you join AmeriCorps?

I joined AmeriCorps in 2006 in Burlington, Vermont in order to immerse myself in my community.  I had lived in Burlington for four years and knew very little about the refugee and immigrant families, the low-income youth, and the great social services which all existed around me.  I have now joined AmeriCorps for a second term in 2009 to take the skills I have gathered over the past three years, and apply them to my current community, that of Sussex County.  I wish to make a positive impact during my time living here.

What are your specific goals in joining AmeriCorps?

I have lived in Sussex County for one year and again, have found myself displaced from much of the population living, struggling, and thriving around me.  I would like to spend the next year getting to know these families, getting to know the volunteers who give their time to these families, and helping to make the experiences of both the partner families and the volunteers a positive one.

Why did you choose Sussex County Habitat for Humanity to do your AmeriCorps service?

I have always been familiar with the Habitat for Humanity organization, but have never directly gotten involved.  Having no construction experience, the idea of helping to build a home has seemed quite intimidating to me.  However, the idea of producing something tangible and something as immense as a new home has always intrigued me.  I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and to dive into the mission of Habitat.

What do you expect to accomplish in your year of service with AmeriCorps?

I expect to get to better know the local community, to become involved with the amazing community of volunteers and with the local partner families.  I also expect to help this organization grow, to recruit a greater number of volunteers and to ensure a positive experience for each volunteer who steps through the Habitat door.

What goals do you have after your service as an AmeriCorps Member?

I would like to pursue a career in the non-profit arena.  I am thinking about the possibility of graduate school, with a degree in non-profit communications or non-profit management.

Paul Becker, ReStore Coordinator

Marcus Johnson, Construction
Hometown: Draper, Utah   College: Catholic University of America

Why did you join AmeriCorps?

I joined AmeriCorps because I wanted to make a difference. Habitat for Humanity has an enormous impact, not only for the family who buys each home, but it also strengthens the community that we work in. I feel rewarded through each time I see a Homeowner in Progress take pride in their home.

What are your specific goals in joining AmeriCorps?

Over the next year I hope to repay some of the blessings I have been given. I also hope to learn more about how a quality home goes together to enhance my architectural education.

Why did you choose Sussex County Habitat for Humanity to do your AmeriCorps service?

Sussex County's diversity and economic focus has created a real need for quality housing that in a larger metropolitan area might be addressed through other agencies. Habitat of Sussex County uses the thriving community movement to address the issues at hand where it is needed most. Plus, there's the beach!

What do you expect to accomplish in your year of service with AmeriCorps?

Make good friends, immerse myself in a new culture and community, and learn how architecture affects homeowners. I would love to see the first steps in place toward a SCHFH LEED certified home by the completion of my term of service.

Charlene Phillips, Family Services Coordinator
Hometown: Salisbury, Maryland   College: Salisbury University

Why did you join AmeriCorps?

There are many choices we have to make in life; millions of them over the course of the years. The majority pertain to ourselves: where we want to go, what we want to do. I see AmeriCorps as a window of time when choices are being made with someone else’s best interest in mind, and that appealed to me as a breath of fresh air.

What are your specific goals in joining AmeriCorps?

I intend to learn as much as possible and apply the skills that I have already acquired to accomplish as much as I can while I am here. That being: serving the families that I will have the privilege of knowing, to the best of my ability.

Why did you choose Sussex County Habitat for Humanity to do your AmeriCorps service?

I would have to say that Sussex County Habitat chose me. I was looking for a position that would enable me to cultivate my passion for language and culture, while making a difference in the lives of others. The job description was specific to my skills and interests. I did not consider another location for my year of service through AmeriCorps.

What do you expect to accomplish in your year of service with AmeriCorps?

I expect amazing things.

What goals do you have after your service as an AmeriCorps Member?

My goal is to embrace each day as a gift. My hope is that I will continue in a career of service, I will learn from the sages of Main Street, I will be a blessing and a friend to those who need one, and I will be thankful and grateful in every season of my life.

Sara Pletcher, Marketing & Design Coordinator
Hometown: Milford, Delaware   College: Immaculata University

Why did you join AmeriCorps?

During my sophomore, junior, and senior years at Immaculata, I had the opportunity to travel to New Orleans, La. to volunteer my time helping Hurricane Katrina victims.  So, when I found this AmeriCorps opportunity, my mind went back to New Orleans, to the people who lost everything and still had a smile on their face, to the wonderful feeling of changing someone’s life for the better.  I decided that if I could give my life to service everyday and work with committed people with similar visions, all the while bringing together families and communities in need, the world would be a better place for all human beings.  Mahatma Gandhi once said, "The best way to find yourself... is to lose yourself in the service of others."  I’m ready and willing to “lose myself” in this AmeriCorps opportunity.

What are your specific goals in joining AmeriCorps?

•   Become a part of the bigger picture
•   Make lasting friendships with other AmeriCorps members, Sussex County families, and SCHFH staff alike
•   Touch the lives of those less fortunate by giving back

Why did you choose Sussex County Habitat for Humanity to do your AmeriCorps service?

After graduation a year ago, my career path led me into the corporate world; however, I still had not found it to be my niche and it was 100 miles in the wrong direction of where I wanted to be living.  Having grown up in Milford, De., I wanted to finally move closer to home, so my job search for Southern Delaware led me to the Sussex County Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps webpage.  An overwhelming feeling that this might be the niche I had been searching for came over me.

What do you expect to accomplish in your year of service with AmeriCorps?

Specifically within my position as Marketing & Design Coordinator, I would like to create a standard design that incorporates the SCHFH logo in every piece of paperwork, literature, news release, etc.  The goal of this design is for the public to associate this particular design with the SCHFH.  I would also like to produce and create mini-movies about the SCHFH to promote on YouTube, furthering the SCHFH brand.  Promoting the new program, A Brush with Kindness, is something I also hope to accomplish this year.  Finally, being that the Marketing & Design Coordinator position is new this year, I expect to establish a strong base for future AmeriCorps members in this position to build off of.

What goals do you have after your service as an AmeriCorps Member?

Upon completion of my AmeriCorps service, I hope to find a job in the service field.  After traveling to New Orleans three times, I knew I was born to serve, so I know that this experience will only strengthen my desire to serve.  I will always want to be a part of the bigger picture and know AmeriCorps will only help me get there.
