Sussex County Habitat for Humanity houses are sold with no profit made. Homeowners contribute "sweat equity" and house payments are recycled to build additional houses.
Volunteer

Sussex County Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer-driven organization. We welcome people from all walks of life to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with God and families in need. Though the vast majority of our volunteers have no construction experience or building skills, volunteers are involved in most phases of construction. By working side-by-side with families who will live in the house, our volunteers experience for themselves the joy created when people are able to realize their dreams of homeownership.

Habitat volunteers contribute more than muscle. Creativity, strategy, and technical skills are among the many invaluable traits volunteers bring to the organization. With a minimal staff, Sussex County Habitat depends upon volunteer committees for support with projects like Family Services, Public Relations, Resource Development, Faith Relations, and Construction. We also offer opportunities in our SCHFH ReStore, a building materials resale center that relies heavily on volunteers.

We invite volunteers to help us build, work in the SCHFH ReStore, assist at community events, serve on committees, and help with special projects that benefit the organization. Time commitments vary; some volunteers dedicate every day of the week to Sussex County Habitat and others spend just a few hours each month working on projects or in the SCHFH ReStore. As a volunteer for Sussex County Habitat, you can choose to volunteer as little or as often as you would like. All of these positions are a tremendous help that combine to produce the end result of simple, decent, and affordable homes in Sussex County.

August's Volunteer of the Month:
St. Louis Parish Youth Ministry
St. Louis Parish Youth Ministry arrived at Grace United Methodist Church in Millsboro on Aug. 11. As the AmeriCorps members stood to greet this group of 16- 18 year olds, they began to perspire from the simple act of walking 20 feet. Yet, the heat had no effect on these young people who poured off the buses and vans with an eagerness to serve unparalleled by any of their predecessors.  Many times, this fervor to aid those in need fades from this age dynamic after the first few days of frustrating, labor intensive, construction projects. However, St. Louis Parish’s momentum never faltered, but actually intensified as the week progressed. The intensity displayed can be seen at 6th St. in Laurel, where an entire deck of Twin Homes was laid in a week and also at Columbia St. in Milford, where Candy Russell’s house was completely primed and painted during the same week. If all these contributions to our community weren’t enough, this group of young people fundraised for months in advance and donated $5,500 to SCHFH (an absolutely unbelievable contribution to eliminate poverty housing in Sussex County). St. Louis Youth Ministry exhibited an understanding of service that we all truly could aspire to replicate.  Special thanks to Dr. Pat Sprankle who organized this group of empowered youth!
