Sussex County Habitat for Humanity houses are sold with no profit made. Homeowners contribute "sweat equity" and house payments are recycled to build additional houses.
Women Build

“A Few Good Women”

Sussex County Habitat for Humanity is looking for a “few good women” to assist with Women Build 2010. From writing press releases to reading blueprints and from construction to contributions, there is a place for you to help a single mother and her children. Habitat’s “Hand Up, Not a Hand-Out” philosophy has the future homeowner doing “sweat equity,” working alongside volunteers to make the dream of homeownership a reality. Interested women can contact Habitat at [ email ].

Leadership Team Job Descriptions will be posted shortly.

What is Women Build?

Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity International program that seeks to include, encourage and empower women in the mission of building simple, decent, and affordable housing.  Sussex County volunteers came together to build a Women Build house in 1998, as part of the First Ladies Build, and then again in 2007.  Construction on the third Women Build house began on January 17th, 2009.

Why Women Build?

Women Build creates a comfortable, un-intimidating environment for women to learn construction skills and taps into an enormously underestimated resource. This gives women an opportunity to contradict stereotypical roles. Also, Women Build increases the number of houses that will be built with families in need.

The Housing Need in Sussex County:

347 people contacted SCHFH about homeownership between January and August 2008. On average, 49 people each month.

Sussex County Habitat has built homes for 44 families since 1991, and we hope to build 10 more houses this year.
