On a Build Site

Sussex County Habitat for Humanity offers both construction and non-construction volunteer opportunities for you. You do not need to be an expert in construction to help us on a work site. There are many tasks that require only a willingness to learn and work with others. While on-site construction work is the most popular of Habitat's volunteer opportunities, we do make every effort to incorporate all willing volunteers regardless of their skill level. To participate in active construction, volunteers must be at least 16 years of age or older. We are able to schedule younger volunteers to assist with landscaping, painting, and other similar non-construction projects on-site.
Becoming a construction volunteer with Sussex County Habitat is simple!
1.  Sign up! You must register in advance. Click on the blue button to the right to register to volunteer.
*Due to safety concerns and group size limits, no "walk in" volunteers are allowed on site. Individual volunteers must receive a confirmation e-mail to participate at build sites.
2.  Show up! Please arrive by 9:00am and be ready to work the entire day. You should wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty. We have all the tools you'll need on-site as well as plenty of drinking water.  Often church and community groups support us with lunch donations; you will be notified by e-mail if your lunch is being provided.  Otherwise, do pack a lunch.

When you arrive at the work site, you'll be asked to sign in for the day, provide an emergency contact and phone number, and sign a volunteer waiver. We start the day with a welcome, some general safety reminders, and a morning prayer. Then we'll get to work!

Please note: Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian complete a youth waiver prior to arriving on-site.
We usually work rain or shine, but if the weather forecast looks questionable, please call 302-855-1153 anytime after 7:00 am on the day of construction.  The answering message will be changed to either confirm or cancel construction.
We use the information you provide in the Registration to help you determine where your skills would best help us, or to provide you with information on available volunteer opportunities so you can choose where you would like to help. The information you provide to us is never shared with any other organization or company. Please review our Privacy Policy by scrolling to the bottom of this website.
