The House That ReStore Built

(January 3,2012, Georgetown Point) Teeth were chattering, and bodies were shivering when Sussex County Habitat for Humanity Youth Coordinator and AmeriCorps member, Tyler Fitzgerald, started Habitat’s First Nail Ceremony on Tuesday, January 3. Students from Delmarva Christian High School’s (DCHS) J Term project, Habitat volunteers, and representatives from the ReStore endured the 20 degree weather to hammer a “first nail” into the Georgetown Point home.

Not only did the ceremony kick-off of the 3 week J Term project (approximately 40 DCHS students will frame, sheath, and blue board the house without using power tools), but was also symbolic of the many groups that are instrumental in the construction of this home. This Habitat house is unique; the first of its kind. The SCHFH ReStore is sponsoring this particular home in Georgetown Point. This year, proceeds from the ReStore will go towards the construction costs of this specific Habitat house.

(above)Colby Willey and Jacob Wroten, DCHS seniors and co-presidents of DCHS’s Habitat chapter, each hammered a nail to represent their school’s contribution to the project. Tony Etze, long-time Habitat volunteer, SCHFH Board President, Jeff Joseph, Guy, who’s mother is currently in the Habitat Partner Program, and Denise Jackson, Manager of the ReStore each hammered a nail on behalf of their respective areas as well.
